Borehole Yield Testing

Leaderr approved Borehole Yield Testing - water surveyor with a laptop and tripod beside a trailer-mounted borehole drilling rig on a rural South African property

Borehole Yield Testing measures how much water a borehole can deliver over time without running dry. A test pump draws water at measured rates while the water level is recorded. It is about quantity. Water quality is a separate test. See Borehole Water Testing.

Send the borehole depth, intended use and access details to get yield test quotes.

What Does Borehole Yield Testing Include?

  • Step drawdown test. Pumping at increasing rates, often four steps of an hour each, to see how the water level responds.
  • Constant rate test. Pumping at one rate for a longer period. Larger supply and licence work typically runs 24 to 72 hours.
  • Recovery test. Measuring how fast the water level comes back after pumping stops.
  • Water sample. Often taken near the end of the test for lab analysis.

Who Needs Borehole Yield Testing?

  • New borehole owners before buying a pump.
  • Farms and businesses planning larger abstraction.
  • Anyone applying for a licence or registration.
  • Owners checking whether an older borehole has declined.

How the Process Works

  1. Set up. A test pump and water level probe are installed.
  2. Pump. Steps and constant rate pumping, with readings at set intervals.
  3. Recover. Readings continue after the pump stops.
  4. Analyse. The data is used to recommend a sustainable pumping rate and pump depth.

What Affects the Cost?

  • Test duration.
  • Borehole depth and expected yield, which sets the test pump size.
  • Analysis by a hydrogeologist.
  • Water sampling and lab fees.
  • Travel.

Borehole Yield Testing Prices

Ballpark prices so you can sanity-check a quote.

ItemBallpark price
Basic yield testR1,500 - R5,000
Standard pump test with step, constant rate and recovery phasesR3,000 - R7,500
Pump test with detailed hydrogeological analysisUp to about R10,000

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures, rounded, taken from rates published by South African borehole businesses and cost guides. They are not our prices or quotes, and no contractor is bound by them. Most sources do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT, travel and exclusions on every quote. No source publishes separate prices per test duration.

What You Receive

  • Recorded water levels and pumping rates.
  • A recommended sustainable yield, for example in litres per hour.
  • Recommended pump installation depth and daily pumping hours.
  • Graphs and a short report, if quoted.

Limitations

A test shows how the borehole performs at the time of testing. Yields can change with drought, neighbouring boreholes and borehole condition. Short tests give less reliable figures than longer ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is yield testing the same as water testing?

No. Yield testing measures quantity. Water testing measures quality in a lab.

How long should a yield test run?

Home boreholes are often tested for a few hours. Irrigation, commercial and licence work typically needs longer constant rate tests, as set by a hydrogeologist.

Can I skip the test and just install a pump?

You can, but an oversized pump can run the borehole dry and burn out. Testing protects the pump and the borehole.
